Continuous Conveyor Drying – Biomass Drying

The main reason for drying biomass is to reduce the overall energetic efficiency, prior to the biomass combustion and storage. Further encouraged by various government renewable heat schemes (such as RHI) solid biomass (including solid biomass contained in waste) system has drawn more attention to utilising waste heat from biomass boiler as well as biomass drying process. Alvan Blanch customers already witnessed some satisfactory drying result from conveyor drier applications on woodchip, digestate, grass, straw, animal manure, and many other types. We have listed below two typical drying processes for your information.

Continuous Conveyor Drying – Digestate

Digestate is known as a nutrient-rich fibrous substance produced by anaerobic digestion, and there is an increasing demand on dried digestate for animal bedding, fertiliser, and other on-farm use. Especially for on-Farm AD projects, post-AD process - dewatering and drying digestate becomes inevitable, considering the saving on transport cost and reuse of heat from engine and CHP units.

The drier will efficiently dry digestate from a maximum moisture content of 75% down to below 10% if required. If higher input moisture is required this can be achieved through the addition of our back-mixing system.

Continuous Conveyor Drying – Woodchip

Woodchip drying is a vital part of a biomass fuel production which adds to bio solid fuel quality: continuous drying process utilises heat from biomass boiler, which is charged by fuels such as woodchip, wood shaving and wood logs. Biomass Energy Centre’s study indicates that the wetter the intake fuel is, the less responsively the boiler operates, and therefore drying process becomes essential in improving efficiency on woodchip usage. In addition, we supply a series of auxiliary equipment such as pelleting press, briquetting press, chopper and Hammermill to cater to woodchip and other biomass markets.

Continuous Conveyor Drying – Grain Drying

Continuous conveyor drier is specialised for handling crops as well as other industrial materials. An optional grain hopper can be fitted in the feed section on all CD range driers to facilitate granular product intake, such as grain, wheat, barley, rice, etc. As CD driers adopts the same unique louvered bed principle as to other range of grain driers, drying bed blockage can be prevented, while a higher drying consistency can be achieved under a prompt and precise air flow control.

For applications and installations where different types of driers are required, Alvan Blanch manufactures a range of alternative driers such as DF and SPD ranges, as well as a full range of rotary driers, both batch and continuous. More information about other drier ranges are available here.

Versatile Drying Control Systems

Alvan blanch offers both relay logic control and PLC (programmable logic controller) systems for the range of driers. We aim to improve our user friendliness and offer a control system that has remote control built into it, so that drier settings can be adjusted by iPad, iPhone, Android and similar. In particular, with our upgraded PLC system, the drier operator is able to view a different screen as to the drier supervisor, while the supervisor’s screen reflects latest remote operation happened on the machine. In addition, fault-finding diagrams are built into HMI and machine manual so as to facilitate the operations. With regard to the data storage, PLC internally stores key values with date and times stamped, which can be used for future operational analysis and comparison.

Throughput, thermal and electrical power values are approximate and will vary depending on ambient conditions, product variation, drier temperature and drier set up. (Overall width includes larger footprint of externally mounted fans)

Batch Rotary Driers

Batch Rotary Drier

  • Highly efficient - low energy consumption
  • A single machine - can be supplied for a range of different uses
  • Can also act as a mixer - to add other ingredients to the material after drying

These driers are suitable for a variety of products, but are particularly suitable for very wet and dense products.

Batch Rotary Drier

The product to be dried is loaded in the drum where it is constantly re-circulated until it is dry. The drier is mounted upon loadcells to monitor and control the drying process as it continues. In addition these driers can be used to sterilise the product using an internal steam manifold.

Continuous Rotary Driers

Continuous Rotary Drier

  • Optimum conservation of nutritional properties - due to low temperatures used
  • Convenient, automated operation - virtually maintenance free

These driers are suitable for a variety of applications for both heavy and light products.

Continuous Rotary Drier

The internal configuration is different depending upon the products being dried. Each has a highly insulated drum to ensure minimal heat loss. They are designed to maintain a constant flow of product through the drier.

Energy

Electrical
The main motors are fitted with energy saving electrical inverters which provides excellent controllability and also optimises the power usage against loading.

Heat sources
Multiple heat sources can be used such as diesel or gas burners (natural, LPG, biogas), biomass, CHP (direct or indirect) hot water, steam, waste heat (low or high grade).

Multiple Drying zones and heat recovery
Each drier is equipped with the facility for multiple stage drying to ensure optimum efficiency for the particular product being dried. This means that different temperatures and airflows can be used in different drying zones or stages. Heat recovery can be incorporated to ensure that all added energy is used to its maximum potential.

Uniquely Versatile - perfect results on every material

No other range of driers can match the range and condition of materials that can, and have been, successfully handled by these driers.

An Example of the Products Dried
Alfalfa Coffee Beans Grass MSW Pyrethrum Rice Wheat
Barley Compost Grass Seed Maize Potato Peelings Seaweed Woodchip

Cocoa Beans Evening Primrose Malted Sorghum Peas & Beans RDF Straw

Environmental Impact

Flexible planning solutions
The standard drier is low profile designed for internal installation. New drier installations can blend unobtrusively with existing building profiles, often overcoming very tight planning constraints.

Low Noise
All fans have special low noise impellors (aerofoil bladed, backward curved centrifugal type). All noise is generated at low level and so on particularly sensitive sites, sound barriers can be erected

Emissions
These driers all have low emissions with respect to dust, Nox, Sox, and VOC’s (level dependant upon the drying air temperature and product) Visible plumes can also be avoided by incorporating exhaust dehumidification with energy recovery.

Installation
All these driers are quick to install as they come in virtually one piece which reduces cost and the disruption of site works.

Model: TDC 95

Construction

The TDC consists of three main prefabricated units. These units comprise a drive end section, intermediate sections the number of which determines the size and capacity of the machine) and a tail end section. Units are available in full stainless steel or mild steel (protectively coated inside and out improving lifespan and appearance). The drier trays are made from 2mm thick perforated stainless steel or mild steel and are supported by white Nylon rollers.

Each section, including the intermediate sections, includes a hinged inspection/access door to enable a sample of the product to be removed for testing. The drive and tail sections include additional doors for easy maintenance and assembly.

Operation

The main principle behind the operation of the drier/cooler is a conveying band formed from a number of perforated steel or stainless trays pivoted between two chains. This conveying band eliminates attrition of the product by moving parts and is chain driven from an inverter speed controller.

These flat trays carry measured amounts of product, at a uniform depth from the spreader in the drive section to the tail section where guides allow the trays to pivot and transfer the product from the top to bottom deck. On the bottom deck the guides relocate the trays back into a horizontal position prior to collecting the falling product from the top deck.

The drier is heated by high performance, high efficiency pressure jet burners (diesel or gas fired) although other heating options are available such as steam, hot water, waste heat, biomass etc. Aspiration of the drier bed is achieved via the use of individually adjustable aspiration hoods which are connected via a duct and cyclone system to a high performance fanunit. The Alvan Blanch TDC range of drier/coolers can be tailored to meet a wide range demands/requirements and are infinitely variable with speed, capacity, bed depth and heat application easily controlled, altered and monitored.

Fan / Heater Unit

$
0
0

Model: B25 Fan/Heater

Key Features

  • To dry medicinal or aromatic herbs on a ventilated platform
  • Capacity - approximately 10kgs of dry plant per m2 per 24 hours
  • Propane or natural gas burners - heat exchanger option available
  • High performance, low noise backward curved centrifugal fan rotor
  • Designed to operate continuously without supervision
  • Direct drive for low maintenance/maximum efficiency

Application

The fan/heater units are designed to work in conjunction with a perforated platform on which the wet crop is laid - to a depth of about 30 cm (depending on crop). The stem and leaf of any type of plant can be dried, as well as grains and roots. Very dense matter such as large roots can need a much slower drying time at a greater bed depth and a lower airflow.

Construction

High performance backward curved centrifugal fan impellor direct driven by electric motor ensures optimum efficiency and low noise. The automatic pressure jet burner - LPG or Natural Gas fired - is mounted in a furnace duct on inlet to fan. The control panel incorporates safety shutdown systems and digital thermometer for temperature control and display - including alarm functions. The unit is pre-wired and factory tested. The drying platform can be of very simple construction with concrete block walls supporting a framework of steel tubes on which are laid the perforated steel sheets. It is normally built by the grower's own labour- although bed materials can be supplied, as required.

Operation

The fan/heater delivers hot air at controlled temperatures (generally 40°C for most herbs) to the drying platform. In most cases the crop will be fully dry within 2 hours, at the end of the cycle the furnace is turned off so that the crop can be cooled. Greater fuel economy can be achieved by designing the installation so that in the latter stages of drying when the exhaust air is not saturated with moisture, a proportion of the waste heat can be recycled back into the fan furnace.

Biomass Dryer

Continuous Conveyor Drying – Biomass Drying

The main reason for drying biomass is to increase the combustion efficiency by de-watering the biomass products. The solid biomass system has drawn more attention to utilising waste heat from biomass boilers and CHP engines as a biomass drying process. Further encouraged by various government renewable heat schemes (such as RHI) solid biomass (including solid biomass contained in waste) system has drawn more attention to utilising waste heat from biomass boiler as well as biomass drying process. Alvan Blanch customers already witnessed some satisfactory drying result from conveyor dryer applications on woodchip, digestate, grass, straw, animal manure, and many other types.

The biomass dryer will efficiently dry digestate from a maximum moisture content of 75% down to below 10% if required.

Continuous conveyor biomass dryer is specialised for handling crops as well as other industrial materials. An optional grain hopper can be fitted in the feed section on all CD range dryers to facilitate granular product intake, such as grain, wheat, barley, rice, etc. As CD driers adopts the same unique louvered bed principle as to other range of grain dryers, drying bed blockage can be prevented, while a higher drying consistency can be achieved under a prompt and precise air flow control.

For applications and installations where different types of driers are required, Alvan Blanch manufactures a range of alternative dryers such as DF and SPD ranges, as well as a full range of rotary driers, both batch and continuous. More information about other drier ranges are available here.

Versatile Drying Control Systems

Alvan blanch offers both relay logic control and PLC (programmable logic controller) systems for the range of dryers. We aim to improve our user friendliness and offer a control system that has remote control built into it, so that drier settings can be adjusted by iPad, iPhone, Android and similar. In particular, with our upgraded PLC system, the dryer operator is able to view a different screen as to the drier supervisor, while the supervisor’s screen reflects latest remote operation happened on the machine. In addition, fault-finding diagrams are built into HMI and machine manual so as to facilitate the operations. With regard to the data storage, PLC internally stores key values with date and times stamped, which can be used for future operational analysis and comparison.

Seaweed Drier

With over 65 years of experience, Alvan Blanch have an in-depth understanding of drying and know that it is an ancient way of preserving crops and other materials. By its very habitat, seaweed is very high in moisture when first harvested; we have created a solution to ensure this moisture is reduced and the seaweed is preserved.

Seaweed is packed with nutrition, as a source of iron, zinc, vitamin B, vitamin K and iodine. This means that seaweed is utilised across a variety of applications including, animal and human consumption, fertiliser and biomass.

Drying seaweed prior to processing can extend the life of the product by up to two years. Although most seaweed is processed shortly after harvesting and drying, the drying process greatly extends this window. When first harvested, seaweed can have a moisture content as high as 95%; a moisture content this high would mean the plant would quickly begin to break down. The desired moisture content for processing is around 10%.

CD22000 Seaweed Drier

Although drying is essential, the over-heating of the seaweed can potentially deplete the levels of dense nutrients within.
The drying process must be gentle, but effective. As seaweed is also a non-free flowing product, our Conveyor and
Rotary Driers are the best solution for the efficient drying of seaweed.

Alvan Blanch are industry leaders in hemp drying, processing up to 140,000 tonnes of the crop per year. We also remain as the manufacturers of the “World’s Biggest Hemp Dryer”, located in Europe, and measuring around 50 metres.

Hemp is a delicate crop and has to be handled with care. For its use in the pharmaceutical industry, the preservation of the oil is essential. The CBD essential oil is unable to be extracted , from the resin within the leaves and fibres, if the product has a moisture content that is higher than 10%. However, if heated and dried too quickly, the oil can be damaged and less valuable. Hemp is one of the most versatile crops that we process. The seeds (the inner kernels of the plant) have a range of  uses in the food industry. Once dried, the seeds are then often sold whole as a health food, or they are cold pressed for the production of nutritious oil.

As such a delicate crop, it is important that it is processed promptly to prevent the growth of mould and fungus that could greatly damage the plant. This is where an Alvan Blanch Hemp Drying System has benefits beyond other methods.
A simple loading system means the plant can be immediately fed into the dryer, and the drying process begins straight
away – there is no manual labour or delays, such as those found within a drying room method. The effective,  but gentle
processing of an Alvan Blanch Hemp Drying System ensure the maximum levels of CBD are retained.

Alvan Blanch Hemp Drying Solutions:

Alvan Blanch design and manufacture a range of Hemp Dryers. These dryers work around the needs of our customers, suited to a variety of
capacities. With highly efficient drying at low temperatures, our Hemp Dryers ensure that plant breakage is reduced.

One of our Hemp Dryers is our Conveyor Dryer model. As the most versatile in our range, the CD is optimised for the drying of hemp. The design
of the CD means the crop is moved along the dryer bed by several product agitators, as a result, non-free flowing products are easily conveyed
through the dryer. The speed at which the product moves through the dryer is controlled with the variable speed drives. The main spinner at the feed
section of the dryer allows the user to adjust bed depth from the initial loading. These hemp drying systems start from 10 metres and go up to 50 metres
long, depending on capacity demands and footprint.

Alvan Blanch Hemp Dryers are capable of handling very wet products, in particular our Rotary Dryer range. Suitable for those who are
looking for an efficient dryer in a smaller footprint.
This range of Hemp Dryers have an almost a completely automated operation, with a low energy consumption. The Alvan Blanch Hemp Dryer
range gives the user complete control of the machine settings. This allows for control of the conditions and a more consistent process that
ensures the quality of the end product.

The Alvan Blanch Hemp Drying System is also suitable for the drying of hemp seeds. As a popular product in the food industry, drying is an essential step to ensure the safety standards of the product. As the product is free-flowing, the Double Flow works as an efficient Hemp Seed Dryer. The unique louvered bed moves the seed along the dryer, at even and controlled bed depth. The Hemp Seed Dryer’s conveying system eliminates the possibility of hotspots and blockages, minimising any potential damage that could be caused.

As with other dryers in the Hemp Drying Systems range, the Hemp Seed Dryer has a gentle process; with several features that make it effective even at low temperatures, mostly due to the balanced air flow. The cooling section, in the bottom bed, allows the seed to be cooled properly before storage. This section is also capable of recovering the waste heat from the dryer.

Our Hemp and Hemp Seed Dryers can be run on a variety of heat sources, including the waste heat from a biomass boiler. These varied heat
sources ensure the environmental impact of the drying system is greatly reduced.

We work to build a complete solution around your requirements – no matter how big or small.

Versatile Drying Control Systems

Alvan blanch offers both relay logic control and PLC (programmable logic controller) systems for the range of dryers. We aim to improve our
user friendliness and offer a control system that has remote control built into it, so that dryer settings can be adjusted by iPad, iPhone, Android
and similar. In particular, with our upgraded PLC system, the dryer operator is able to view a different screen as to the dryer supervisor, while
the supervisor’s screen reflects latest remote operation happened on the machine. In addition, fault-finding diagrams are built into HMI and
machine manual so as to facilitate the operations. With regard to the data storage, PLC internally stores key values with date and times stamped,
which can be used for future operational analysis and comparison.
